Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of transformational leadership (TL) on radical and incremental innovation through the mediating roles of knowledge sharing (KS) behaviors. This study also attempts to bring deeper insight of the correlation among the latent factors by examining how knowledge-centered culture (KCC) moderates the effects of TL on KS behaviors and innovation capability.

Design/methodology/approach

This study conducts a questionnaire survey and Structural Equation Modeling to test the proposal research model based on a sample of 321 participants in 85 service and manufacturing firms.

Findings

The results revealed that KS behaviors significantly mediate the relationship between TL and two types of innovation. Specifically, knowledge collecting has more significant effect on incremental innovation compared with influence of knowledge donating. By contrast, knowledge donating has a greater effect on radical innovation compared with effect of knowledge collecting. The paper also highlights the important role of KCC in enhancing the effects of TL on KS activities and innovation capabilities.

Research limitations/implications

The study has highlighted the important role of KCC as it positively moderates the influences of TL on KS and innovation capability.

Practical implications

The study provides evidence that TL style is the main driving force of KS processes. Managers should prioritize practicing this leadership style to improve employees' KS behaviors and firm's innovation capability.

Originality/value

The study significantly fills the gaps in the literature that emphasizes how KS behaviors induce different impacts on specific aspects of innovation capability. By exploring the moderator of KCC, the paper significantly contributes to advancing the understanding of how transformational leaders foster employees' KS behaviors for improving radical and incremental innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the important role of frugal innovation for firms in the developing and emerging countries, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of transformational leadership (TL) on frugal innovation through the mediating roles of tacit and explicit knowledge sharing.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper used a quantitative research method and structural equation modeling to test the relationship among the latent factors based on a sample of 339 participants from 120 Vietnamese firms.

Findings

Findings reveal the significant impacts of TL on aspects of frugal innovation, namely, frugal functionality, frugal cost and frugal ecosystem. Moreover, the paper highlights the mediating roles of tacit and explicit knowledge sharing (KS) in the relationship between TL and frugal innovation in terms of frugal functionality and frugal cost.

Research limitations/implications

To bring a deeper understanding of the benefits and important role of knowledge resources, future research should investigate the potential mediating mechanisms of knowledge management processes in the relationship between specific leadership styles and frugal innovation.

Practical implications

The paper provides a valuable understanding and novel approach for managers and directors of firms in developing and emerging countries to improve their firms’ frugal innovation capability through leadership practice and knowledge resources.

Originality/value

This study contributes to bridging research gaps in the literature and advances the insights of how TL directly and indirectly fosters frugal innovation via mediating roles of tacit and explicit KS.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to the vital role of innovation for firms to respond effectively to the rapid changes of business environment, the purpose of this study is to explore the influence of transformational leadership (TL) on innovation capability of firms via mediating role of knowledge management capability (KMC). It attempts to deepen insight on the moderating mechanism of innovation culture (IC) in enhancing the effects of KMC on two specific aspects of innovation capability namely product and process innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper utilized structural equation modeling (SEM) and cross-sectional design to test hypotheses in the proposed research model using data collected from 339 participants in 75 manufacturing and service firms in China.

Findings

The findings indicate that TL directly or indirectly affect firm's innovation via mediating role of KMC. The findings highlight that influences of KMC on aspects of innovation capability are different and depended on the degree of innovative climate in an organization.

Research limitations/implications

Future research should examine the mediating mechanisms of knowledge acquisition, knowledge sharing and knowledge application to provide deeper insight on specific roles of knowledge management's constituents in linking TL and innovation capability.

Originality/value

This study contributes to bridging research gaps in the literature and advancing the insights of how TL directly and indirectly fosters product and process innovation via mediating roles of KMC. By investigating moderating role of IC, this study has provided the valuable initiatives and integration view of a new mechanism to foster specific dimensions of innovation capability of firms in developing and emerging market.

Abstract

Purpose

Owing to the growing importance of frugal innovation to the development of firms in the developing and emerging countries, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of inclusive leadership (IL) on frugal innovation through the mediating roles of tacit and explicit knowledge sharing (EK). It also explores the possible moderating role of competitive intensity (CI) in the relationship between knowledge sharing (KS) and frugal innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected data via a questionnaire survey of a sample of 325 participants from 112 manufacturing and service firms to validate the relationship between inclusive leadership, knowledge sharing behaviors, competitive intensity and frugal innovation. Structural equation modeling and regression are adopted to estimate the effects of inclusive leadership on frugal innovation through the mediating role of knowledge sharing and moderating role of competitive intensity.

Findings

Findings reveals the significant impacts of inclusive leadership on aspects of knowledge sharing and frugal innovation. Moreover, the influences of tacit and explicit knowledge sharing on frugal innovation capability are enhanced in the intensive competitive environments.

Research limitations/implications

Future research should investigate the potential moderating role of perceived organizational support in the relationship between specific aspects of knowledge sharing behaviors and frugal innovation.

Practical implications

The paper provides a valuable understanding and novel approach for managers and directors of firms in developing and emerging countries to improve frugal innovation capability through inclusive leadership practices and promotion of knowledge sharing in organizations.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

Knowledge sharing (KS) and innovation are generally believed as the antecedents of key outcomes that help firms to attain and sustain competitive advantage in long term. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the mechanism of how interpersonal trust and leader support affect KS and improve firm’s innovation capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a research paper which is built using empirical data collected from 68 manufacturing and service firms in China.

Findings

First, the findings show that leader supports moderate the correlation between interpersonal trust and KS. Second, KS serves as mediator in the relationship between interpersonal trust and firm’s innovation capabilities.

Research limitations/implications

KS plays a crucial role in stimulating innovation capabilities for both manufacturing and service firms. Future research should explore the effects of the motivational factors (such as positive psychological state, perceived benefits and costs) on KS and firm’s innovation capabilities.

Practical implications

The paper provides the evidence for the positive effects of interpersonal trust on KS, which in turn is significantly associated with product innovation and process innovation. It highlights the important role of leader supports in promoting the degree of sharing knowledge among individuals to enhance innovation capabilities for firms.

Originality/value

This study puts the theory of innovation forward based on exploring the key factors that have potential and positive impacts on two specific types of innovation capability, namely, product innovation and process innovation, for both manufacturing and service firms.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of ethical leadership on radical and incremental innovation through the mediating roles of tacit and explicit knowledge sharing (KS).

Design/methodology/approach

The paper used a quantitative research method and structural equation modeling to test the research hypotheses based on a sample of 365 participants from 115 Vietnamese firms.

Findings

The results indicated that ethical leadership is positively related to radical and incremental innovation. In addition, tacit and explicit KS significantly mediate the relationship between ethical leadership and the two types of innovation.

Research limitations/implications

This study is cross-sectional, which limits its ability to control the specific features of the correlations among the factors in the long term.

Practical implications

The findings of this study suggest that leaders should invest in practicing and applying a moral lens to motivate positive KS behaviors of employees and organizational capabilities for innovation.

Originality/value

This study significantly fills gaps in the literature and advances the understanding of how ethical leadership fosters employees’ KS to improve radical and incremental innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effects of transformational leadership on individuals and organization’s innovation capability via the mediating role of employees' positive psychological capital (Psy-Cap) namely self-efficacy and optimism.

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to test proposal hypotheses through the empirical data collected from 330 participants at 90 firms in Vietnam.

Findings

The research findings revealed that self-efficacy and optimism significantly mediate the relationship between transformational leadership and innovation capabilities. In addition, self-efficacy has a greater impact on innovation capabilities compared with the effect of optimism.

Practical implications

The findings highlight the important role of practicing transformational leadership style to nurture and foster both employees' positive psychology sources and firms' innovation capability.

Originality/value

The paper has significantly advanced and deepened our understanding of how transformational leaders connect with employees to nurture and develop one of the most special aspects of human resource in contemporary working environment called employees' positive Psy-Cap for stimulating firm's innovation capabilities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the correlation between ethical leadership (EL), collaborative culture (CC), knowledge-centered culture and employees’ behaviors toward knowledge sharing (KS) in Chinese firms.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper used structural equation modeling to examine the level of how EL, CC and knowledge-centered culture impact on tacit and explicit KS of employees via the data collected from 319 participants in 51 Chinese firms.

Findings

The research findings show collaborative and knowledge-centered culture mediates the relationship between EL and employees’ KS behaviors. It highlights the necessity of practicing EL style to develop a positive climate aimed at positively improving tacit and explicit KS of employees.

Research limitations/implications

Future studies should focus on investigating the relationship between EL, CC and knowledge management process or the other variables to explore and maximize their potential and benefits toward key organizational outcomes.

Practical implications

This paper offers leaders a deeper understanding of the effective pathways to build positive climates for fostering employees’ tacit and explicit KS.

Originality/value

This paper is unique in the attempts to increase the understanding of moral lens by which EL might successfully arouse a positive organizational culture and foster KS behaviors in their firms.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the important role of knowledge resource for organizational innovation, the purpose of this study is to examine the mediating mechanism of knowledge management capability (KMC) and the moderating role of knowledge-centered culture (KCC) in the relationship between human resource management (HRM) and firms’ innovation capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

Analysis of moment structures and structural equation modeling are applied to examine the correlation among the constructs based on the survey data collected from 135 manufacturing firms.

Findings

The empirical findings reveal that KMC positively mediates the relationship between HRM practices and innovation capability. Especially, KCC of organization significantly fosters the impacts of HRM practices on KMC and aspects of innovation capability, namely, exploitative and exploratory innovation.

Practical implications

Chinese firms should invest in HRM practices and KMC to improve their innovation capabilities. In addition, developing KCC is suitable for Chinese firms to foster the effects of HRM practice on innovation capability.

Originality/value

By investigating the different moderated-mediation mechanisms, the paper has significantly contributed to advancing the body of knowledge of innovation theory and providing deeper insights on the correlation between HRM practices and firm’s capability for ambidextrous innovations.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to explore the differences in transformational leadership’s (TL’s) influences on each aspect of innovation capability, namely, product innovation and process innovation. It also deepens understanding of the pathways and conditions to improve specific aspects of innovation capability by assessing the mediating role of knowledge sharing (KS) and moderating mechanism of perceived organizational support (POS).

Design/methodology/approach

The paper utilized structural equation modeling and cross-sectional design to test hypotheses in the proposed research model based on using data collected from 394 participants at 88 Chinese firms.

Findings

The findings indicate that KS mediates TL’s effects on innovation capabilities. In addition, the influences of TL and KS on specific aspects of innovation capability are different and depend on the extent of employees’ POS.

Research limitations/implications

Future studies should test mediating roles of knowledge management’s constituents and/or investigate the moderating roles of firm ownership form to increase the understanding of potential factors or key conditions that may have significant influences on a firm’s innovation capability.

Practical implications

The paper significantly contributes to increasing the understanding of the link between TL and specific aspects of innovation capability by highlighting the important role of stimulating KS and enhancing POS.

Originality/value

The paper provides useful information and valuable initiatives to increase leadership outcomes and firm’s capability for innovation.
